🇺🇸 Illinois Becomes First US State To Tax Crypto Transactions

Governor Pritzker signed the Digital Asset Tax Act into law. A 0.2% tax now applies to crypto transaction value, not your profits. You pay even on a loss.
Effective: January 1, 2027
Who Collects It:
Exchanges, custodians and wallet providers serving Illinois users ($100K+ receipts) must register and collect the tax as a separate line on your bill.
The "Own Wallet" Confusion:
Exchange to your cold wallet (withdrawal): likely taxed, a broker is involved
Your MetaMask to your Ledger (no broker): broad wording, but no one to collect, so hard to enforce
What's Next:
Legislature is out of session. A fall veto or a legal challenge are the most likely paths to change it. Industry groups call it the most punitive digital asset tax in the country.
