The “on-chain butcher” that slaughtered 100,000 people was brought down by a trap involving a 66-layer fake contract.
In May this year, Vitalik Buterin himself made a $4 exchange transaction—you read that right, $4—and this bot still rushed in to grab a bite.
It didn’t even spare the Ethereum founder’s $4 order.
Greed at this level isn’t just about chasing profit anymore—it’s pathological.
Over the past year, 70% of Ethereum’s sandwich attacks came from it. It executed up to 90,000 attacks per month. Every year, it siphoned about $60 million from ordinary traders’ pockets.
It is the biggest predator on-chain.
Then retribution arrived.
On June 20, a hacker spent weeks deploying 66 forged token contracts and fake liquidity pools.
Fake WETH, fake USDC, fake USDT—everything was packaged as “trading opportunities that look like you can make money,” and fed with precision into the bot’s automated decision-making system.
The bot took the bait.
It approved an “auxiliary contract” controlled by the attacker. Then, in a single transaction, the hacker called all backdoor permissions at once—
1,474 WETH, 2.87 million USDC, 2 million USDT, totaling $7.5 million.
All cleared out.
The level of irony in this incident is worthy of being written into the crypto history textbooks.
A bot that made a living by “clamping in on others” was counter-killed by a smarter person using a “reverse MEV honeypot attack.”
“The predator suddenly realizes it’s the prey.”
Another thing that happened around the same time:
Secret Network’s Axelar cross-chain bridge was attacked on June 10, suffering a loss of $4.67 million, and wasn’t discovered until June 17.
The attack lasted a full 7 days—no one noticed.
The vulnerability had been in place since early 2023, when it was deployed, and it had never undergone an external audit.
A flaw sat there for three years; it was exploited for a week before it was even found.
“You think you’re HODLing, but your money may already be gone—you just don’t know it yet.”
When many people saw Jaredfromsubway get hacked, their first reaction was—“Haha, serves him right!”
I get it. Too many people have been clamped by it.
But if an attacker has the skills and tools to take down a top MEV bot, who would be their next target?
Not you, not me.
Don’t celebrate too early. The day the hunter becomes the prey, the gunfire is already very close to you.
