Ethereum is facing a new debate that extends beyond price action. While ETH has recently rebounded from a major support zone, concerns are growing about whether the ecosystem can maintain the level of funding needed to support long-term protocol development.
Former Ethereum Foundation contributor recently raised concerns that Ethereum could face a gradual funding shortfall as key funding programs expire and the reduces its spending commitments over the coming years.
According to VanEpps, Ethereum's network of client teams, researchers, security experts, and coordination groups requires roughly $30 million annually to continue delivering upgrades and maintaining the infrastructure that supports the blockchain. While the amount is relatively small compared to Ethereum's overall market value, he believes the ecosystem lacks a clear and sustainable plan to replace existing funding sources.
One major concern is the expiration of the Client Incentive Program (CIP), which for four years provided staking-based rewards to client teams responsible for maintaining Ethereum software. The program ended in April, and no successor initiative has been announced.
At the same time, the Ethereum Foundation is transitioning toward a more limited role in ecosystem stewardship. After spending heavily to support Ethereum's growth over the last decade, the Foundation plans to gradually reduce annual expenditures as part of a broader sustainability strategy.
VanEpps warned that the consequences of reduced funding may not be immediately visible. However, over time, underinvestment could slow development progress, weaken Ethereum's ability to tackle scaling and security challenges, and make it harder to retain experienced contributors. He also noted that losing talented developers could ultimately impact the network's competitiveness and innovation pace.
The discussion comes amid broader organizational changes within Ethereum. The recent departure of co-executive director and other notable contributors has intensified conversations around how Ethereum's future development should be funded and coordinated.
As Ethereum continues evolving, the community faces an important challenge: creating neutral, transparent, and scalable funding mechanisms capable of supporting one of the largest blockchain ecosystems in the industry.

Ethereum has bounced sharply from the $1,500 support region, offering the first meaningful sign of strength after an extended period of downside pressure. Buyers have successfully defended a critical demand zone, preventing further deterioration in market structure and triggering a short-term recovery.
Despite the rebound, Ethereum remains in a broader bearish trend on the daily timeframe. The market continues to print lower highs and lower lows, indicating that sellers still hold the advantage until key resistance levels are reclaimed.
The recent recovery has improved sentiment, but confirmation of a larger trend reversal remains absent.

$2,465 โ Strong supply region.
$3,448 โ Long-term bullish target.

The strongest positive signal for Ethereum would be a sustained breakout above the $1,937 resistance level. Such a move would indicate that buyers are beginning to absorb overhead supply and regain control of short-term momentum.
If ETH successfully clears the $2,112-$2,220 zone, the market structure would improve considerably. This area represents a critical hurdle where many traders may begin reassessing the broader bearish outlook.
A successful move above this region could open the door for a continuation toward $2,465 and potentially trigger stronger participation from institutional and long-term investors.

While buyers have defended support effectively, downside risks remain.
A rejection below the $1,937 resistance area could signal that the recovery is losing momentum. If ETH falls back beneath the $1,550 support zone, sellers could quickly target $1,385.
A break below $1,385 would strengthen the bearish case and confirm that the broader downtrend remains intact, increasing the probability of another major leg lower.

The recent rebound suggests that demand remains active at lower price levels, but the market has not yet provided enough evidence to confirm a sustainable recovery. Momentum indicators are improving, yet price action continues to trade below major resistance zones.
For now, Ethereum is caught between strong support and equally strong resistance, creating a critical decision point for the market.

Ethereum is entering a period where both fundamentals and technicals are demanding close attention. On one side, concerns regarding ecosystem funding and long-term development sustainability are becoming increasingly important. On the other, ETH is attempting to recover from a deeply oversold market structure.
The coming sessions could prove decisive. A breakout above $1,937 and eventually $2,220 would strengthen the recovery narrative and improve market sentiment significantly. However, failure to maintain support above $1,550 could place Ethereum back under bearish pressure.
Until a clear breakout occurs, traders should remain focused on these key levels, as they are likely to determine Ethereum's next major directional move.
