US–Iran Talks Delayed as Diplomatic Clock Keeps Moving
The first round of planned US–Iran discussions in Switzerland did not begin as expected after both sides delayed their travel plans. The White House pointed to unresolved logistical issues, while Vice President JD Vance canceled his scheduled trip.
Reports also showed that the Iranian team held back its departure as military action continued in southern Lebanon, adding fresh pressure to an already difficult process.
Even with the delay, the broader framework remains in place. Both sides have electronically signed the memorandum of understanding, creating a sixty-day period for further discussions on key issues. The pause does not end the process, yet it reduces the time available for detailed work and political compromise.
Meanwhile, shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz has gradually resumed, offering cautious hope for greater stability in a waterway that carries a major share of global energy cargo. The easing of traffic has been viewed as a positive sign, though wider regional security concerns remain.
Observers will now watch for a revised meeting schedule. The coming days could prove decisive, as every delay leaves less room for progress before the agreed time frame reaches its close. Diplomatic efforts still have a path forward, but the margin for success is becoming smaller with each passing day.
