US White House: Vance cancels Iran negotiations trip; Iran postpones trip to Switzerland
According to CCTV News, due to ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanon, Iran postponed its trip to Switzerland. On June 18 local time, an informed source said that because Israel continues to attack southern Lebanon, Iran’s negotiation delegation has delayed its trip to Switzerland.
The source said that before deciding to suspend the trip, the delegation had already been preparing to depart and planned to kick off the first round of 60-day negotiations. Iran previously informed the US and the mediating parties that the Lebanon issue remains a core component of US-Iran negotiations and would directly affect whether the talks continue or are halted.
The source also revealed that Iran warned that Israeli forces have advanced about 10 kilometers into Lebanon, continuing military operations and launching attacks—openly violating Article 1 of the memorandum of understanding.
On June 18 local time, the White House said that because logistical arrangements for the next phase of negotiations have not been finalized, Vice President Vance will not depart for Switzerland as originally planned that evening. Vance was originally scheduled to attend the signing ceremony of the US-Iran memorandum to be held in Switzerland on June 19.
A White House spokesperson said that, as Vance said at the press conference that day, the details of the upcoming technical negotiations have not yet been finalized. The US delegation is prepared to depart at any time, but “these logistical arrangements for negotiations are never simple, and it is difficult to predict them.”
The spokesperson said that for now, Vance will not depart that evening; once the next steps are clear, they will be announced in a timely manner. The White House also said it expects to begin technical negotiations as soon as possible.
In addition, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz—who is a mediator for the US-Iran memorandum—has also canceled his originally planned trip to Switzerland.
On June 19, the Secretariat of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council issued a statement saying that Iran will closely monitor the implementation of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding. If the US violates it, Iran will take resolute countermeasures.
Israel is negotiating with the US on keeping troops stationed in Lebanon
Xinhua, Beijing, June 19—Two Israeli officials disclosed on June 18 that Israel is firmly seeking to retain its troop presence in southern Lebanon and is holding consultations with the US on this issue. One Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that Israel is “engaging in negotiations to stick to its position” with the US government. Israel’s position will not be compromised, including continuing to deploy troops in areas south of the Litani River in Lebanon. Another anonymous Israeli official said that the outcome of the consultations ultimately depends on whether US President Trump decides to “apply strong pressure” on the troop-stationing issue and threaten Israel that “if it does not comply with the terms of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding, the US will take corresponding measures.”
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office has not yet responded to the above reports. In the text of the US-Iran memorandum released on the 17th, both sides include provisions for an immediate and permanent cessation of military actions on all fronts, including Lebanon. The text explicitly mentions respecting Lebanon’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty. Also, according to Lebanon’s “Square” TV, on the 18th the Israeli forces launched attacks on two locations in southern Lebanon. On the 18th, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Baghaei said that if Israel continues to attack Lebanon, it will be considered a violation of US commitments.
