The difference between the two teams taking the field in Philadelphia tonight is perhaps the biggest quality gap of this World Cup.
Brazil are five-time world champions. They are at the top of the global FIFA rankings. Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Rodrygo, Cunha, and perhaps Neymar. Within Ancelotti's system, they have the most talented attacking group in the world.
Haiti are in the World Cup after 52 years. For the first time since 1974. They are ranked 82nd in the world. One win in five matches. They started with a 1-0 loss to Scotland. But explaining this match only by the difference in quality would be insufficient. The real story is the pressure Brazil is currently under.
In their first match, they drew 1-1 with Morocco. They dominated the pitch, created chances, and Vinícius Júnior equalized with a beautiful goal. But we also saw them lose. Against organized teams like Scotland and England, they were repeatedly squeezed in the midfield. In the Morocco match, the opponent reached 14 shots on goal. This was the first time since the 2006 quarter-final that Brazil conceded a shooting advantage to their opponent. The result could have been different without Alisson's last-minute double save. Therefore, this match is not just a task for Brazil, it's a necessity. Getting points isn't enough; they need to close the goal gap. In Group C, Scotland leads with 3 points. Morocco and Brazil are tied with 1 point each. Haiti has zero. If Brazil doesn't win by a large margin, the Morocco match will become much more critical. The tactical picture is clear. Haiti will park the bus. A very deep defensive block with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Bellegarde is one of their most well-known players in midfield. They hope to get something from a set piece or counter-attack. It's known that Brazil has historically struggled to break down this low block. But here, the difference between Haiti and Morocco comes into play. Morocco is an organized, technically strong team capable of high pressing. Brazil has struggled against them at times. Haiti is defensive but technically much more limited. The difference in individual quality comes into play when the block breaks down, and Haiti won't be able to make collective attacks from midfield for long periods. The Neymar issue is being discussed in this match as well. He returned from Santos, he has a slight muscle edema. Ancelotti will probably not start him, but his entry into the game in the second half is being considered. This match is also symbolic for Neymar. A return to the World Cup stage.
There's something to appreciate about Haiti. Just being here after a 52-year wait is historic. Their defense was organized against Scotland, they held onto the score for a long time. For this squad, success isn't just about scoring goals, it's about showing that they deserve every minute on the pitch.
But against Brazil, that's much harder.
Vinícius Júnior has directly contributed to four goals in his last five World Cup matches. Raphinha is one of the most consistent wingers in the Premier League. Rodrygo is a great stage player. And Cunha hasn't shown his full potential yet in this tournament, expectations are high.
My expectation is 4-0. Or a score in that range. Haiti can resist for 20 to 30 minutes. But once Brazil scores the first goal, the structure will start to crumble and the individual difference will become apparent. Looking at the rest of the group standings, Brazil needs to get 3 points from this match and a strong goal difference. If they succeed, they will go into their final match against Morocco with a strong lead for direct elimination. If they fail, this tournament will become much more complicated for Brazil. Philadelphia is staging one of football's greatest inequalities tonight. But football sometimes shatters these inequalities on the stage. I'm looking at the probabilities, I'm looking at history, and I'm saying Brazil. But I'm also saying Haiti will stay on the field.
