The biggest flaw of the old order is not that it has too few labels, but that it has too many. Education, job titles, companies, income—at their core, they are identity labels. They show which system recognizes you, not what you have created for the world. As education becomes increasingly widespread, certificates grow ever more abundant, and titles become ever cheaper, identity labels have long since begun to suffer from “inflation.” The old order documents your identity; the new world verifies your worth. The old order cares who you are; the new world cares what you leave behind. The most important asset of the future is not titles, but your work; not your track record, but your influence; not the labels others give you, but the mark you leave on the world.
