The England – Croatia match will become one of the most interesting encounters of the 2026 World Cup group stage. It’s not just a tournament opener for both teams, but also a principled showdown with a rich history, including the dramatic 2018 World Cup semi-final.
England, under the leadership of a new coaching staff, looks like one of the tournament favorites. The team qualified without losing any points, boasting a powerful attacking line led by Harry Kane, as well as creative midfielders and a deep bench. Their main advantage is intense pressing, quick transitions to attack, and high individual skill.
Croatia is traditionally considered a tournament team. Even with a roster update, the experience of Luka Modrić and an organized game under the coaching staff’s guidance allow Croatia to remain a very dangerous opponent. They know how to endure without the ball, use set pieces wisely, and wait for opponents’ mistakes.
A key factor could be the midfield. If England can impose its tempo and quickly deliver the ball into the opponent’s penalty area, it will have a significant advantage. Croatia will try to slow down the game and turn the match into a tactical battle, where experience could play a decisive role.
A rather cautious start is expected, as the first match of the World Cup often proceeds with minimal risk. Most analysts lean toward England’s favor but predict few goals scored.
My prediction: England 2:1 Croatia.
