That Liquidation Night Taught Me the Most Expensive Lesson Discipline Is Everything

Hey everyone,

Some nights completely change you as a trader. For me, it was a hot evening in May 2025 in Ankara. I got home from work, opened my laptop, and there it was — Gate futures screen glowing in front of me. The market was showing some real momentum, especially one AI narrative altcoin that was pumping hard. The community was buzzing everywhere: “This is the one,” “Easy 3-5x,” everyone was saying.

My inner voice was loud and clear: “Don’t miss this. This time is different. You deserve it.”

I had around 2800 USDT in my account. I knew risk management, but that night logic disappeared. I threw 45 percent of my stack into an 18x long. In the first 90 minutes, price shot up 38 percent. My unrealized PnL hit 480-500 dollars. My hands were shaking, heart racing, constantly refreshing the chart. “Just a little more,” I told myself. Instead of taking profit, I added more margin and even increased the position. “This momentum is real,” I convinced myself.

Then came the brutal dump. 28 percent drop in under 10 minutes. Panic hit. “I’ll just average down,” I thought. Another mistake. Then another.

Result? Full liquidation. A huge chunk of my account vanished in seconds. The feeling is hard to describe — emptiness, rage, deep regret all at once. “Why didn’t I sell at plus 38 percent?” “Why the hell didn’t I set a stop loss?” I stared at the screen like it was going to magically recover. I couldn’t sleep that night. The next day at work I was completely off. That empty feeling stayed with me for weeks.

After that disaster, I stepped back. But I didn’t quit. That’s when I truly discovered one of Gate’s strongest features — Copy Trading. I started following experienced traders, watching exactly when they entered, how they took partial profits, where they placed stops, and how strictly they managed risk. I restarted small — 50-100 USDT positions only. Clear rules: max 1-2 percent risk per trade, take partial profits, never let emotions drive.

Slowly but surely, I recovered. Today I trade much calmer and more consciously. That painful night gave me lessons money can’t buy. I still use Gate futures, but now with control. I also believe in the platform long-term — they keep adding useful social features, the futures market is solid, and I hold some GT in my portfolio because I’ve seen it perform well through cycles.

Real talk for beginners:

- Practice on demo or with tiny amounts for at least 3-4 months before going aggressive.
- Before every trade, ask yourself: “What’s the maximum I can lose here?” If it’s more than 1-2 percent, reduce size.
- When you’re in profit, don’t fall for the “just a little more” trap. Take partials.
- Use Gate’s Copy Trading. Study the best traders and internalize their discipline — it’s the fastest way to learn.

That liquidation didn’t break me — it woke me up. Crypto’s biggest enemy isn’t the market. It’s our own greed and fear.
