According to SK Telecom, this South Korean telecom operator has received Horizon Europe research funding for a three-year quantum key distribution (QKD) system project that utilizes photon integrated circuits and AI.
The company states that this is the first private Asian entity to receive support from the program for quantum cryptography research.
SK Telecom will develop a PIC-based QKD system and build a test platform, with partners including Greece’s National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos, Austria Institute of Technology, German semiconductor startup Synogate UG, and Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI).
The project aims to miniaturize QKD hardware and improve system stability through AI-based real-time calibration.
