According to Sing Tao Headlines, the quadrennial World Cup will kick off this week. Hong Kong police expect there may be an opportunity for illegal gambling activities to increase during the tournament. For this reason, they have launched the “Gobi and Wind Shield” operation to severely crack down on offshore gambling activities. Regarding cases involving betting with virtual assets, Chief Inspector Wong Yu-wai of the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau said that while many offshore gambling platforms have added virtual currencies as a payment option, transfers via banks and stored-value payment instruments remain the main method. Even if virtual assets are used to settle wagers, the police also have extensive experience and the capability to investigate and respond.
