ZODL launches Ironwood network upgrade, aiming to restore the verifiability of ZEC circulating supply

Wu Says has learned that Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL), a key contributor to the Zcash ecosystem, has announced a new network upgrade proposal and privacy pool called Ironwood, in collaboration with Tachyon, Valar Group, Zcash Foundation, and Shielded Labs. Ironwood will be built on the existing Orchard protocol and will further enhance security through formal verification (Formal Verification) and additional independent audits.

Under the proposal, the entire ZEC supply in Orchard will be migrated to Ironwood via the “Turnstile” (turnstile) mechanism. This mechanism allows anyone to independently verify Zcash’s circulating supply, ensuring that the amount of ZEC in circulation does not exceed the quantity that actually enters the new pool. After the upgrade, the Orchard pool will close new deposits and internal transactions, allowing funds to move to Ironwood only through Turnstile. It is reported that Ironwood plans to activate at the end of July 2026, after zcashd stops supporting it (block height 3,417,100), but the exact timing still depends on the progress of testing, review, and ecosystem coordination.

Orchard has directly stopped taking new deposits and made a hard switch to Ironwood; the team’s execution capability is solid.

The Turnstile mechanism is cleverly designed, with transparent and verifiable circulation volume, so you no longer have to guess how much is in the pool.

Will only activate at the end of 2026? There's enough time left for testing; I hope it doesn't get delayed like some projects that keep postponing.

Formal verification + independent audit, this upgrade fully maximizes security, ZEC holders can rest assured.
