Mars Finance News: On June 6, security engineer Taylor Hornby, who used the Anthropic Opus 4.8 AI model to identify a serious vulnerability in Zcash, said that Monero (XMR) has been added to the audit queue, and that further security reviews will be conducted on additional privacy-coin projects in the future. Hornby previously discovered on May 29 that the Zcash Orchard privacy pool had a critical vulnerability—one that had gone unnoticed since May 2022 and, in theory, could allow attackers to infinitely mint an undetectable fake ZEC that would not be detected. Shielded Labs, the development team, completed an emergency fix by June 1 and then publicly disclosed the details of the vulnerability. Due to the incident, ZEC fell as much as 38% within 24 hours after the news was released, as the market worried that attackers may have exploited the vulnerability to steal funds from the privacy pool without leaving any on-chain traces. Hornby said that in April this year, he was commissioned by the non-profit organization Shielded Labs to identify protocol vulnerabilities before attackers found them. Although he had the conditions to profit from exploiting the vulnerability, he chose to report the issue to the development team, saying, “I can’t accept such a betrayal.” In addition, Hornby plans to apply for Zcash community grants to support subsequent security research efforts.
