The risk of Iran developing nuclear weapons is higher now than it was a year ago, when the U.S. and Israel struck Iran.
According to the latest data from the IAEA, Western officials say the risk of Iran secretly developing nuclear weapons is higher than it was a year ago when the U.S. and Israel first took military action against Iran. The IAEA has warned member states that Iran's large stockpile of near-weapon-grade uranium presents new proliferation risks. Before the 12-day war starting in June 2025, this material was inspected weekly to prevent weaponization; now, the situation has changed. Two diplomats familiar with the reports said that the war has created nuclear issues that did not exist before, and the longer the material is stored outside regulation, the more likely it is to be used for non-peaceful purposes.
