Due to the exposure of a ruble stablecoin circumventing Western sanctions, Russia has imposed sanctions on a 17-year-old British teenager.

Recently, Russia imposed sanctions on a 17-year-old British teenager for accusing Russia of using ruble-linked stablecoins to evade Western sanctions, making him the target of a crackdown.

The teenager is named Alexander Browder, the son of American-born British political activist Bill Browder. He said that he may be the “world’s first high school student sanctioned by an authoritarian regime for exposing corruption.”

Alexander Browder also confidently stated that this precisely proves his work in exposing Russia’s ruble stablecoin used to circumvent sanctions has “seriously touched the nerve” of the Russian government.

In March this year, Alexander published a report on the “Global Cryptocurrency Money Laundering Database” website, saying that the funds for this ruble stablecoin are supported by deposits from Russia’s financial institution Promsvyazbank and are used to evade Western sanctions imposed due to the Russia-Ukraine war.

According to a report released by CertiK this week, this ruble-linked stablecoin has processed more than $110 billion worth of on-chain transactions. And the European Union imposed sanctions on ruble stablecoins in October last year, determining that they are intended to bypass financial restrictions on the Russian economy.

It is reported that Alexander Browder may be the youngest individual in the history of Russia’s sanctions. His father, Bill Browder, is also a well-known political activist, known for exposing Russian corruption and leading the global Magnitsky Justice movement.

Meanwhile, Russia’s legislative body is advancing an important regulatory bill, which proposes criminal penalties for unlicensed cryptocurrency activities.

In April this year, Russian lawmakers reviewed the bill, authorizing authorities to impose criminal penalties on unlicensed digital asset services and requiring mandatory registration with the country’s central bank.

If passed, this proposed bill titled “Digital Currency and Digital Rights” could see unlicensed platforms banned from operating as early as July 2027.
