CoinWorld News reports that Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox disclosed a critical vulnerability that could allow attackers to create an unlimited amount of counterfeit ZEC in the network's Orchard shielded pool.
The vulnerability has existed since May 2022, was discovered on May 29, and fixed on June 1.
Following the disclosure, the price of ZEC plummeted nearly 30%, and investors expressed concerns about the potential impact on this privacy coin.
Zooko stated that attackers could exploit the vulnerability to mint unlimited ZEC in Orchard.
Although the team fixed the issue before any evidence of abuse was found, Zcash's privacy design makes it impossible to verify whether anyone exploited the vulnerability in the past.
Crypto researcher Hupzy described this incident as a major trust event, believing investors are in a difficult position because no one can independently verify the integrity of the supply.

Sigh—if only it could really go back to zero, then who knows, it wouldn’t be so bad. Even “being a guest” could let you make a fortune, but going long—then it’s just gone.

Orchard's design is truly a double-edged sword; privacy is in place, but auditing can't keep up.

A 30% drop is considered polite; if the market had been infinitely manipulated, it would have collapsed long ago.

The mine was planted in 2022 and only exploded now. How did the team handle internal risk control?
