My boomer dad just told me the secret to financial success is simple.

“Live below your means.”
So I asked him what his mortgage payment was at 28.
$340 a month.
I asked what he made.
$28,000 a year.
His mortgage was 14% of his income.
My rent is 52% of mine.
He looked at me like I was making excuses.
I looked at him like he was speaking a different language.
Because we are.
He didn’t live below his means.
He lived in an era where means were actually livable.
That’s not advice that’s nostalgia dressed up as wisdom.
