Golden Finance reports that on June 4th, Challenger, the U.S. employment data company, showed that the technology industry announced layoffs of 38,242 people in May, the highest single-month layoff total since August 2024.
So far this year, the technology industry has announced layoffs of 123,653 people, a 66% increase compared to 74,716 in the same period in 2025.
The industry remains the sector with the most layoffs so far in 2026.
Challenger stated, "The labor market is being reshaped in real-time by technology. Artificial intelligence has now become the primary reason for layoffs, and the tech industry is the most affected sector."
He added that AI has not yet brought about an apocalyptic job loss as some predicted.
Like spreadsheets and emails before, this technology will ultimately boost workers' productivity, but our data shows that companies have already taken action based on AI, with layoffs citing AI as the reason more than any other cause.
The unresolved question is not whether AI will change the labor structure, but how fast the change will occur.
