Gold Financial Reports, June 3 — According to informed sources, Elon Musk's xAI has paused recruiting specialists to train Grok, signaling a potential shift in how it develops its technology. Since the beginning of this year, xAI has been actively recruiting accountants, financial experts, scientists, and even comedians to teach Grok how to perform better across various areas, from taxes to humor, in order to expand the appeal of this chatbot. This approach differs from competitors, who typically rely heavily on large numbers of contractors from third-party companies to train and optimize their AI models. According to sources, xAI decided to suspend these positions (internally called "AI mentors") at least partly due to concerns that the company's HR department might be overwhelmed and unable to handle new hiring. Sources also revealed that xAI laid off several AI mentors last fall, many of whom were versatile talents, and subsequently tried to recruit more personnel focused on data annotation. These individuals also stated that xAI conducted another round of layoffs in early March, with other teams also reducing staff.
