Trezor and Tropic Square Disclose Hardware Vulnerabilities, Protecting Users’ Funds

Abstract generation in progress
Crypto news, Trezor and Tropic Square recently disclosed a hardware-level vulnerability found in the Tropic01 secure element chip used in the Trezor Safe 7 wallet. This vulnerability was identified during an independent security audit conducted by Ledger Donjon, where researchers discovered that laboratory laser fault injection attacks could extract secrets from the chip and bypass firmware signature checks. Trezor stated that the vulnerability affects only one of the three independent security layers within Safe 7 and does not provide access to user PINs, wallets, or funds. Despite discovering the vulnerability, both companies explicitly stated that user funds remain secure and that customers do not need to take any action. Trezor CEO Matej Žák pointed out that Safe 7 is designed with multiple independent security mechanisms to prevent single points of failure from jeopardizing customer funds.

The user doesn't need to take action = temporarily relax, but still feel a twinge of unease in their heart

Matej Žák's response is quite steady; multiple independent designs are indeed what a hardware wallet should look like.

Hardware-level vulnerabilities sound scary, but since only two of the three layers can still be used, it’s a timely move to cut losses.
