According to U.S. Secretary of State Rubio, speaking at a congressional hearing held on June 3, the Trump administration will not lift sanctions on Iran after Iran resumes passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and will not do so as an exchange. He emphasized that any sanctions relief must be contingent on Iran giving up its nuclear program, and added that the core reason for the United States’ sanctions on Iran is its uranium enrichment and related nuclear activities. As the conflict with Iran enters its fourth month, Rubio noted signs that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mujtaba Khamenei is becoming increasingly involved in negotiations.
