The earliest prototype of the compass "Si Nan" can be traced back to the Warring States period of China (around 475-221 BC), and it was widely used in navigation by the Northern Song Dynasty.

The mechanical clock, in the true sense, was invented in 14th-century Europe, with a time difference of over 1500 years between the two.
The compass was invented before the clock,
because direction is more important than time.
