Wu said that Galaxy Research reports that anonymous plaintiff Noah Doe and two Wyoming LLCs filed a lawsuit in March 2026 in the Supreme Court of New York County, seeking confirmation of their legal ownership of 39,069 long-dormant Bitcoin addresses and approximately 3,799,629 BTC held within them, valued at about $293.5 billion at the price as of May 25, 2026. This amount includes approximately 1.096 million BTC believed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto, approximately 79,957 BTC from Mt. Gox hacker addresses, and approximately 2,131 BTC from Counterparty burn addresses. Galaxy Research believes the legal basis for the lawsuit is questionable, including because the plaintiffs do not hold private keys or have actual control of the BTC, yet value each address at less than $10 to enable a faster path to attribution, and attempt to complete substitute service through an on-chain notice using OP_RETURN. The report states that even if the plaintiffs prevail, they cannot obtain the private keys or transfer the BTC, but they may assert their rights when the relevant BTC enters centralized exchanges or custodial institutions based on the court ruling; long-term dormancy does not mean that ownership has been abandoned.
