White House Economic Director Calls on the Public to Rationally View Economic Data Fluctuations
On Sunday, Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council, in an interview with ABC's "This Week," called on the public to rationally view the fluctuations in monthly economic data and avoid overly pessimistic emotions caused by media focus on a single "disappointing" indicator.
Hassett used gasoline prices and their impact on inflation as an example, pointing out a noteworthy phenomenon observed by the White House. That is, whenever a consumer price data point performs poorly, public opinion and attention are entirely occupied by that one data point.
This way of focusing easily amplifies short-term, localized negative signals. Overemphasizing the performance of a single data point may cause people to overlook the overall operation of the economy, leading to a one-sided judgment of the economic situation.
Hassett emphasized that assessing the economic condition should focus on the big picture, rather than energy prices or a temporarily struggling individual sector. He advised the public to "view these fluctuations calmly" and shift attention to more substantive indicators, namely changes in real wages.
He further explained that a careful observation of the overall data reveals that increases in employment, rises in the stock market, and robust corporate profits are collectively translating into higher wages for workers.
This statement aims to indicate that the core drivers of the current economy (employment, corporate profits, wage growth) remain solid, and investors should not be obscured by short-term price fluctuations.
In summary, Hassett starts by dispelling biases toward single data points, guiding the public to break out of the misconception of focusing on isolated data, and rebuild an economic assessment perspective based on the whole picture and a broad view.
This interpretive perspective not only provides a more objective framework for understanding the current economic situation but also points the way for market participants to establish a long-term, comprehensive economic data evaluation system.
