SoftBank commits to investing 75 billion euros in building artificial intelligence facilities in France

SoftBank commits to investing up to 75 billion euros to build a large-scale artificial intelligence computing cluster network in France, which will become the largest data center project in Europe. This is also SoftBank's largest single AI investment outside the United States. According to sources, after French President Emmanuel Macron dined with Masayoshi Son in Tokyo in early April this year, the two parties quickly finalized this cooperation. SoftBank will initially lead an investment of 45 billion euros, planning to establish a 3.1 gigawatt computing capacity in the Upper Normandy region by 2031, with plans to add an additional 2 gigawatts of capacity later. The first phase will only be completed in 2031. With AI iterations happening so quickly, will 3.1 gigawatts still be enough by then?

Is SoftBank seeking a new outlet after increased regulation in the United States? Europe becomes the backup and is now becoming the main option.
