BCA’s Chief on the AI Frenzy “Escaping the Top”: It’s a Profits-Driven Bubble, Not a Traditional Valuation Bubble; AI Demand Indicators Will Signal the Market Stage

Abstract generation in progress
Mars Finance News, on May 30th, BCA Research Chief Global Strategist Peter Berezin stated that the current AI bubble is mainly a profit bubble rather than a traditional valuation bubble. Unlike many past stock market bubbles characterized by rapid surges in price-to-earnings ratios (PE), the current AI-related sectors, especially semiconductors, have relatively reasonable valuations, but profit expectations are overly optimistic and unsustainable. Similar situations in history appeared in real estate developers and banks before the 2008 financial crisis: their surface PE ratios were not high, but they relied on unsustainable profit surges. Once profits fail to materialize, the bubble will burst. Peter pointed out that semiconductor sales have shown parabolic growth, and current AI demand indicators have not yet indicated an imminent bubble burst, but all bubbles will eventually end. Peter emphasized that investors should not overly rely on Wall Street analysts' profit forecasts, as stock prices often decline significantly before profit expectations are revised downward. Historically, after cyclical stocks peak, forward 12-month EPS begins to decline with a lag of several months; waiting until EPS is revised downward to sell can lead to severe losses. The key to current investing is to monitor changes in AI demand indicators in advance.

Berezin's point of view is interesting; in 2008, bank private equity was low but profits were inflated. Will history repeat itself?

The expectation of profit is unsustainable; that's really tough. Don't be the sucker when the bubble bursts.

Unsustainable profits are more frightening than high valuations; the former indicates a collapse in fundamentals.

Proactively monitoring key metrics is crucial; waiting until EPS is downgraded to act is too late.
