According to data from the block explorer, the mainnet Sui experienced its second network outage on Friday, less than 24 hours after the 5-hour and 55-minute downtime on Thursday, which was linked to a gas fee calculation bug in release 1.72. The outage on Friday paused block production around 11:51 UTC, and normal activity resumed around 3:30 UTC after validators deployed a long-term software fix.

Release 1.72 introduces two major protocol features: Address Balances, designed to simplify transactions by moving away from Sui's UTXO-style model, and Gasless Stablecoin Transfers, allowing supported stablecoins to be transferred directly peer-to-peer without gas fees. Sui stated that both outages originated from the interaction between the new balance functionality and the gas fee logic in this release.
