SUI Network suffers second major failure due to software defect

CoinWorld News reports that the SUI encrypted network experienced its second major failure on May 29, 2026, causing transaction processing to halt for nearly six hours. The failure was caused by a software defect introduced in the recent update, which prevented the network from producing blocks. After identifying a malfunction in the gas fee system, developers coordinated an emergency upgrade; the recovery required more than two-thirds of network participants to adopt the fix. Mysten Labs confirmed that the failure was triggered by a crash vulnerability introduced in version 1.72 and said it will conduct a comprehensive incident review in the coming days. Although transactions were restarted after recovery, monitoring data showed that performance remained degraded after restoration. According to Coingecko, the SUI token reacted quickly during the disruption, and traders reduced their holdings as uncertainty spread. The incident has raised concerns about the reliability of the network infrastructure, and market participants are evaluating its impact on user confidence and network activity.
