Elon Musk v. Altman: Closing Arguments by the Attorney; the Judge May Rule Next Week
On May 16, the case in which Elon Musk is suing OpenAI entered the stage of closing arguments. The plaintiffs allege that Altman and others have deviated from the non-profit mission they set out with when they were founded, by pushing the company toward commercialization in pursuit of profit; the defendants argue that the shift was made to better fulfill the mission, and that closed-source development is a necessary means of safeguarding AI safety. Both sides’ lawyers are trying to prove they are the most well-intentioned protectors of the non-profit mission. The ruling is expected as early as next week. No matter the outcome, this decade-long lawsuit has already harmed the standing and credibility of all parties involved.
