According to the housing mortgage guarantee agency Freddie Mac, the average interest rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage in the United States last week was 6.53%, continuing to hit a new high since August of last year, up from 6.51% the previous week.

Although mortgage rates are still below levels from a year ago, they have been steadily rising from 6% in February of this year, which has weakened homebuyers' affordability and caused some buyers and sellers to hesitate. Zillow recently downgraded its forecast for this year's housing sales growth from 4% to 1.2%, citing factors such as rising energy prices affecting the market.

According to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), last Friday, mortgage application requests slightly declined, with refinance applications dropping by 18%.
