On May 28, officials appointed by the Trump administration at the U.S. Department of the Treasury are actively pushing to print a $250 bill featuring a portrait of Trump—this would be the first time in more than 150 years that a living person’s image has appeared on U.S. circulating currency. Officials from the U.S. Treasury provided the Bureau of Engraving and Printing with design mockups last August that include Trump’s portrait and signature. The director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, who is in charge of printing matters, was reassigned last month for resisting the plan; in her resignation message, she wrote: “The buck stopped here” (“Responsibility ends here”).

If carried out, this would break the long-standing U.S. tradition of not printing living individuals on circulating currency. Officials appointed by Trump are still putting pressure on the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to advance this currency design, which carries strong symbolic significance.
