I just put together a quick guide on stock market hours because I realize that many people don’t really know what time the U.S. market moves, especially if you’re in Spain.

Here’s how it works: the New York Stock Exchange opens at 9:30 am local time (Eastern Time), and closes at 4:00 pm. But watch out, there’s a pre-market from 4:00 am before it officially opens, and after-hours trading until 8:00 pm after it closes. This is important because big moves sometimes happen outside the main trading hours.

Now, if you’re in Madrid or anywhere in Spain, you need to add hours. The New York market time in Spanish time means that when it’s 9:30 am in New York, it’s already 3:30 pm in Madrid. The close at 4:00 pm in New York is equivalent to 10:00 pm in Spain. Quite late for Spanish traders, honestly.

The Nasdaq operates on exactly the same hours as the NYSE. Both open and close at the same times, although Nasdaq is more known for tech stocks. The NYSE American (AMEX) is a bit different: its pre-market starts at 7:00 am instead of 4:00 am, but the opening and closing times are the same.

A fact worth noting: markets are closed on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and also have 10 holidays per year. In 2025, they will be closed for events like New Year’s, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Good Friday, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

If you want to know the New York Stock Exchange hours in other Spanish-speaking cities: in Lima and Bogotá it’s 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, in Buenos Aires 10:30 am to 5:00 pm, in Mexico City 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Basically, it depends on your time zone.

The important thing is that if you’re trading from Spain or Latin America, knowing the NYSE hours in Spanish time or your local time is crucial for planning when to enter and exit. It’s not the same to trade during pre-market when liquidity is lower than during regular hours.
