Recently organized the trading hours of the U.S. stock market and found that it’s a bit complicated for Taiwanese investors to keep track of this. Now that the U.S. has entered winter time, the corresponding trading hours for U.S. stocks in Taiwan are from 10:30 PM to 5:00 AM the next day, which is one hour different from daylight saving time.
In fact, the trading hours for U.S. stocks in Taiwan are not fixed because the U.S. adjusts for daylight saving time every year, while Taiwan does not, so we have to follow the U.S. time changes. By March next year, the time will shift forward by another hour.
The U.S. stock market itself has three trading sessions: the regular trading hours are from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM (Eastern Time), but if you want to trade earlier or later, pre-market from 4:00 AM to 9:30 AM and after-hours from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM are also available. For Taiwanese traders, the regular session corresponds to 10:30 PM to 5:00 AM the next day, and pre-market and after-hours are even later.
Additionally, it’s important to note that the U.S. stock market has several holidays throughout the year. This year, holidays include New Year’s Day in January, Washington’s Birthday in February, Good Friday in April, Memorial Day in May, Independence Day in July, Labor Day in September, Thanksgiving in November, and Christmas in December. The market is closed on these days. Some holidays also see the market closing three hours early, such as the day after Thanksgiving and the day before Christmas.
The U.S. stock market mainly operates on three exchanges: the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), which lists large companies; the NASDAQ, which is mostly technology stocks (like Microsoft, Apple); and the American Securities Exchange, which mainly handles small and mid-cap stocks. Although the trading hours are listed as corresponding to Taiwan, prices can sometimes vary slightly across exchanges, so that’s something to watch out for.
