Today, I was asked a very interesting question by the department head, which also made me reflect on my own journey.
How long does it really take to become a consistently profitable trader in the crypto world?
Many say 5 years, 7 years, or even a lifetime without truly understanding it. Combining my 8 years of real trading experience through bull and bear markets, and my rigorous risk management mindset as a cardiologist, I’ll share some very practical truths.
The true growth cycle for the vast majority of people
1. Pure beginner losing money stage (1-2 years)
Chasing after price swings recklessly, blindly trusting news, going all-in on trades, not cutting losses, making money in a bull market by luck, losing everything in a bear market through skill.
This 90% of people will completely exit at this stage, never daring to trade again.
2. Starting to review trades, losing less, earning more stage (3-5 years)
Begin studying technical analysis, establishing rules, learning to trade with small positions, no longer losing big, but still unable to achieve long-term stability, and profits may be given back during major market moves.
3. The threshold for truly stable profits (5+ years)
Less than 5% of people can cross this hurdle.
It’s not about how advanced your skills are, but about seeing through: the market is always uncertain, understanding small stop-losses, big profits, and always staying alive—turning trading into a long-term probability game that defies human nature.
What really determines your speed is not time at all
The real difference is never how many years you’ve traded, but these three things:
- Have you truly experienced losses and pain, shattered your luck and obsession?
- Can you establish a trading system that is uniquely yours, repeatable, and verifiable?
- Can you control your emotions, embed rules into your bones, avoid holding onto losses, and not become greedy when profitable?
Many people trade for 10 years but just repeat the same mistakes from year one nine times, always standing still.
The special nature of crypto trading
Compared to stocks and futures, the crypto market is more volatile, with greater leverage temptation, 24/7 trading, and ten times the pressure on human nature.
Here:
- High comprehension, willingness to review, understanding risk control: about 3 years to reach the threshold of stable profits
- Ordinary people, chasing after quick gains, frequently full-position trading: very difficult to succeed in a lifetime
Final heartfelt advice
1. The path of trading is really not suitable for most people. It consumes not only capital but also sleep, mental health, confidence, and a normal life rhythm.
2. The ultimate answer to stable profits is never about predicting the market, but about controlling yourself, your position size, and your losses.
3. Don’t pursue overnight riches; surviving in the market and earning slowly already puts you ahead of 99% of people.
During the day, I am a doctor saving lives, deeply aware of the weight of risk control and reverence; at night, I delve into market analysis, having seen too many stories of skyscrapers rising and collapsing.
Always remember: capital first, staying alive is the prerequisite for any comeback.
