ByteDance opens “Doubao Shares” subscription to Seed employees this month? Insiders: There’s no such “subscription”; you can choose a year-end [something].

Abstract generation in progress
Market reports indicate that ByteDance has opened low-priced stock options linked to the Seed department, called "Doubao Shares," for employees this month, with a price of $13 per share, and stated that this is ByteDance's first issuance of equity targeting a specific business unit. This incentive mechanism will not dilute the earnings of other ByteDance business lines. On May 27, sources revealed that there is no such thing as "subscription" for Doubao Shares; relevant employees can choose to receive their year-end bonus in the form of Doubao Shares. Seed is the core team responsible for large model research and development established by ByteDance in 2023, currently leading the development of Doubao large models, with research directions covering multimodal large models, embodied intelligence, and more. If the year-end bonus is paid out in the form of a lump sum, does resigning nullify it? Such tactics are quite deep.

Compared to OpenAI's shareholding reform drama, ByteDance's approach is simple and straightforward, without any pretense.

The $13 pricing is pretty interesting, it's not giving it away for free nor is it too expensive, ByteDance's move here is very restrained.

Year-end bonuses are paid out in the form of a lump sum; how are departing employees calculated? The detailed rules haven't been released yet, right?

They say it's an optional year-end bonus, but essentially it's just a disguised way to lock people in.

No subscription mechanism = giving it away for free? Then what gets diluted is the parent company's equity, not other lines.

It’s interesting that they won’t dilute the performance of other lines—ByteDance has started to copy Silicon Valley by independently valuing its business units.
