There is a story that never ceases to be relevant in the Brazilian market: that of Luiz Barsi. When it comes to long-term investing here, his name almost becomes synonymous with wealth built through discipline.
Luiz Barsi was born in São Paulo in 1939, into a humble family of Spanish immigrants. He had to work from a young age, which completely shaped his view of money and financial security. With degrees in Law and Economics, he didn’t become a sophisticated trader nor did he create complex funds. He did something much simpler: he turned the stock market into his income tool.
What stands out is that Luiz Barsi built an estimated fortune of around 4 billion reais by investing his own resources, buying shares of solid companies, and living off dividends. No international family office structure, no sophisticated financial products. Just discipline, patience, and compound interest working for decades.
His philosophy is almost opposite to what most people think about the stock market. He has never seen stocks as a tool for speculation or perfect timing. For Luiz Barsi, stocks function like rental properties: you buy, hold for decades, and live off the income they generate. The focus has never been on price appreciation but on recurring income.
He popularized a thesis known as BEST, which groups the sectors he considers essential: Banks (with high cash flow), Energy (predictable and perennial), Sanitation (inelastic demand), and Telecommunications (strategic). Companies like Itaúsa, Banco do Brasil, Copel, and Klabin frequently appear among those he has held in his portfolio.
The most interesting thing is that Luiz Barsi has weathered economic crises, political changes, and entire market cycles while maintaining the coherence of this strategy. While many tried to predict the market, he simply became a partner in good businesses and bought more when everything was cheap.
His importance to the Brazilian market goes beyond the numbers. He popularized the idea that the stock market is not a casino but a legitimate tool for wealth and income building. He inspired generations of investors to think long-term, about dividends, and about building retirement portfolios that sustain a lifetime.
His daughter, Louise Barsi, continues the legacy and is now a reference among the new generation focused on passive income. Luiz Barsi’s method remains a must-consult when it comes to dividend investing in Brazil.
