Many of us hold gold as a safe haven against inflation and crises, but do we truly understand everything related to the zakat of gold? This question is more important than we might imagine.
The truth is that the zakat of gold is not just a fleeting financial obligation — it is a fundamental pillar of Islam, and Sharia has emphasized it strongly. The Prophet, peace be upon him, clearly warned: whoever does not fulfill the rights of their gold will be punished with it on the Day of Judgment. This reflects the great responsibility involved.
The first point to understand: the nisab. If you own 85 grams of pure gold (24 karats), or its equivalent in lower karatages, and a lunar year passes over it, then you are obliged to pay zakat. It doesn’t matter if the gold is jewelry, bars, or even investments like gold funds — the rule is the same.
As for the rate, it is clear: 2.5% of the market value of the gold. The calculation is simple — multiply the weight by the purity, then multiply by the current price, and take 2.5% of the result. For example, if you own 100 grams of 21-karat gold (87.5% purity), and the gram price is 400 riyals, the amount due is approximately 875 riyals.
But the matter varies depending on intention. Gold intended for trade or investment — there is definitely zakat on it, according to scholars’ consensus. As for jewelry used for daily adornment, opinions differ — most scholars see no obligation of zakat on it, but the Hanafi school has a different view. The disagreement exists, but the safest approach is to pay zakat.
An important point: do not delay paying the zakat of gold without a valid excuse. When a lunar year completes, it becomes immediately obligatory. Delay is sinful, and zakat is an act of worship that cannot be postponed.
The eligible recipients of zakat on gold are precisely defined — the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, slaves, debtors, in the cause of Allah, and the wayfarer. It should not be given to others regardless of circumstances. There are also forbidden categories: the family of the Prophet (Ahl al-Bayt), the wealthy, disbelievers, and those whose maintenance you are responsible for.
Regulations are very important — do not give zakat with the intention of showing off or seeking reputation. Do not try to reduce the weight or value to evade it. Do not pay it from unlawful money. All these things invalidate the zakat.
In the end, the zakat of gold is not a burden — it is purification of wealth and soul alike. When you pay it with a sincere intention, you feel peace of mind about your sustenance, and you contribute to social solidarity. This is the essence of this great obligation.
