Recently, there have been reports that BYD is considering acquiring shares in the Alpine team and may take over Renault’s engine plant in France. In response, a reporter contacted BYD for verification, and the company only replied: “There is no information to disclose at this time.” However, Li Ke, Executive Vice President of BYD Group, previously admitted at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show that BYD is engaged in substantive discussions about entering F1. He said BYD has met with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, and that the two sides “have always maintained close contact and ongoing communication.” According to publicly available information, Alpine is currently held 76% by Renault Group and 24% by the private equity fund OtroCapital. OtroCapital is actively looking for a transferee for its shares. Its shareholding agreement stipulates that the shares may only be transferred after three years, and the lock-up period will expire in September 2026, after which the relevant equity will enter a tradable window. The reporter learned that about three to four potential buyers are interested in acquiring the Alpine shares held by OtroCapital. The team has announced that it will withdraw from the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and, starting in 2026, will give up developing its own in-house powertrain and instead purchase Mercedes power units.
