What is the most confusing thing when trading on the U.S. stock market? It's 바로 the U.S. trading hours. Since the time difference with Korea is large and daylight saving time is also applied, it's really important to accurately understand when you can trade.
The main U.S. stock exchanges are NYSE (New York), NASDAQ, and AMEX (American), and interestingly, they all operate during the same trading hours. However, the types of listed companies differ. NYSE mainly lists traditional large companies like Berkshire Hathaway and Johnson & Johnson, while NASDAQ mainly lists IT companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia.
Knowing the exact U.S. trading hours allows you to plan your trades properly. The regular trading hours are from 09:30 to 16:00 Eastern Time, which is 23:30 to 06:00 Korea time (22:30 to 05:00 during daylight saving time). The pre-market runs from 04:00 to 09:30 Eastern Time (18:00 to 23:30 Korea time), and the after-hours from 16:00 to 20:00 Eastern Time (06:00 to 10:00 the next day Korea time).
An important point is that the U.S. stock market has no price limit. Unlike Korea, there are no upper or lower price limits, so be cautious of rapid fluctuations. Settlement occurs two business days later.
Also, check the holidays for 2026. They include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Additionally, on the day before Independence Day (July 2), the day after Thanksgiving (November 27), and Christmas Eve (December 24), the market closes early at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.
Understanding the U.S. trading hours properly helps you not to miss trading opportunities. Since the U.S. market operates at night Korea time, be sure to consider this when planning your trades. If you're curious about other countries' markets, here are some examples: Tokyo Stock Exchange operates from 09:00 to 15:00 (with a break from 11:30 to 12:30), London Stock Exchange from 08:00 to 16:30 (during daylight saving time, 17:00 to 01:30 Korea time), Hong Kong Stock Exchange from 09:30 to 16:00 (break from 12:00 to 13:00), and Shanghai Stock Exchange from 09:30 to 15:00 (break from 11:30 to 13:00).
Since trading hours and holidays can change, it's always best to check the latest information.
