I just recently understood the trading rules of Hong Kong stocks, so I want to share them to help everyone avoid pitfalls. The closing time for Hong Kong stocks is actually quite special, not just simple opening and closing; the entire process is divided into several segments. Trading starts at 9:30 AM and goes until 12:00 PM, then resumes at 1:00 PM and closes at 4:00 PM—that's the main trading session. But what's most interesting is the auction mechanism before and after the market close, especially during the market closing period, from 4:00 PM to 4:10 PM, where the closing time is randomly determined. During this period, investors can still place orders but cannot cancel them, and the system automatically selects the price with the highest trading volume as the closing price.
Another key point is the holiday schedule. In 2026, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange will be closed on dates like New Year’s Day, Lunar New Year, Qingming Festival, Labour Day, and National Day. On Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and the eve of Lunar New Year, there will even be no midday trading. If you want to trade Hong Kong stocks, you must plan your trading dates in advance; don’t wait until you want to trade and then find out the market is closed. Additionally, Hong Kong stocks support T+0 trading with T+3 settlement, and you can short sell. You can also participate through ETFs, options, futures, and other methods, making the flexibility quite high.
