Recently switching back and forth between the mainnet and L2, honestly it's about choosing between "gas fees are too expensive to bear" and "better user experience." I usually only do two things on the mainnet: large transactions or those that must be settled there. Don't gamble on a routing that eats up your slippage just to save a little on gas—it's too stupid. L2 is more comfortable, but don't treat "cheap" as a get-out-of-jail-free card; when liquidity is thin, you can still get slippage that makes you question life.
Whenever news about cross-chain bridges being hacked comes out, I get even lazier about cross-chain transactions. I'd rather wait two more days or just stop messing around so much. Now everyone is quick to say "wait for confirmation," especially after oracle prices have shown anomalies. I don't bother pretending; taking a bit longer helps me sleep better. In short, my compromise approach is very simple: avoid cross-chain transactions if possible, and minimize routing. What I save isn't necessarily gas—it's more about peace of mind.
