I was talking with a friend yesterday about gold and Zakat, and I realized that many people do not know the full truth about this subject. Zakat is not just a financial obligation; it is a great act of worship that Allah has imposed on His servants, and it is a way to purify the soul and wealth and achieve social solidarity among Muslims.
The main point that some overlook is that Zakat includes gold in all its forms—whether you own bars, jewelry for savings, or even gold investments like index funds. All of this falls under the Zakat obligation if it reaches the required nisab.
Regarding the nisab, the minimum is 85 grams of pure 24-karat gold. But if your gold is of a lower karat, like 21K, the nisab differs slightly. The nisab for 21K gold is approximately 97 grams because the purity of this karat is only 87.5%. And if you have 18K gold, the nisab increases to about 113 grams.
The calculation method is very simple: if you own the nisab or more, and a full Hijri year passes on it, you pay 2.5% of its market value. For example, if you have 100 grams of 21K gold and the price per gram is 400 riyals, the pure gold content = 100 × 0.875 = 87.5 grams, which equals 35,000 riyals, and the due Zakat = 875 riyals.
There is a difference among scholars regarding jewelry used daily for adornment. The majority of scholars see that there is no Zakat on it, while Hanafi scholars believe it is obligatory. But if the gold is for savings or investment, Zakat is obligatory by consensus.
The important thing is that you do not pay Zakat except to the eight categories specified by the Quran: the poor, the needy, those employed to collect Zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing slaves, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the traveler. It is not permissible to give it to the wealthy or those whose maintenance you are obliged to provide for, or to disbelievers.
Paying Zakat is not only a religious duty but also a spiritual and moral investment. It purifies wealth from doubts, increases barakah, reduces social disparities, and deepens bonds within the community. The Prophet, peace be upon him, strongly warned against neglecting it, saying that the owner of gold who does not fulfill its rights will suffer on the Day of Judgment.
It is also important to avoid some common mistakes: do not delay Zakat without a valid reason, do not count it as old debts, do not give it with the intention of voluntary charity but with the intention of Zakat, and do not try to evade the nisab by reducing weight or price.
If you currently own gold, I advise you to calculate your nisab accurately, especially if it is 21K, and ensure that a full Hijri year has passed since you acquired it, then pay the Zakat with confidence. This is a great act of worship that brings you closer to your Lord and contributes to building a more just and solidaristic society.
