Italian energy company Alps is reactivating the Cochabamba Cercado gas-fired power plant in Bolivia, which has been idle for 127 MW, in partnership with Qurubiqa, and transforming it into a Bitcoin mining operation. The project abandons the previous model heavily reliant on government natural gas subsidies in Bolivia, instead adopting a fully dollar-denominated commercial operation. Currently, 27 MW of power has been in use, with plans to gradually increase capacity to fully utilize the plant's 127 MW installed capacity. However, as Bolivia's natural gas reserves diminish, ensuring a continuous and economical fuel supply will be a key long-term challenge for the profitability of this mining project.
