I've been involved in investing in oil for a while, and honestly, there's a lot of noise online about the best way to do it. I just updated my notes on the platforms that actually work, so I’m sharing what I’ve found.

First, the obvious: why invest in oil? It’s not just about speculating on the price. Crude oil is the basis for almost everything we use, from fuel to plastics and fertilizers. When it rises, everything becomes more expensive. And that’s critical for protecting your purchasing power when inflation hits. Plus, the volatility is brutal: a conflict in the Middle East, a decision by OPEC+, or a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico can move the price more than 10% in a day. For those trading CFDs, that opens doors to quick profits.

Regarding what to invest in: there are two main types. Brent is the global benchmark (two-thirds of the world’s oil is priced this way), very sensitive to geopolitical crises. WTI is the American one, lighter, and reacts strongly to economic data from the U.S., especially inventory reports. For beginners, both work because they move almost identically (correlated above 90%).

The methods vary: you can go for oil company stocks like ExxonMobil, ETFs that track the price, futures (complex), or CFDs (most accessible). To start, CFDs or ETFs with small capital is the sensible choice.

Now, about platforms. Mitrade stands out for being simple and cheap: zero commissions, only tight spreads, and you can start with $20. It’s regulated by ASIC and CIMA. If you want copy trading, eToro is the reference with its active community, though it requires more initial capital ($100-200). Interactive Brokers is for professionals: direct access to futures, advanced tools, but it’s the old school. Plus500 specializes in CFDs with serious risk management. And Admiral Markets shines if you use MetaTrader 4 or 5.

The truth is, to invest in oil without hassle, Mitrade remains the most straightforward option. If you already have experience and capital, Interactive Brokers offers more options. The key is to choose according to your profile: beginner with little money? Mitrade. Professional with institutional capital? Interactive Brokers. Want to learn from others? eToro. There’s no single answer.
