CryptoWorld News reports that a lawsuit was filed in the U.S. state of New York on May 1, 2026, in which the plaintiff, Noah Doe, seeks a court declaration of legal ownership over 39,069 long-dormant Bitcoin wallet addresses. The complaint cites Section 7-b of the New York Personal Property Law, stating that these wallets are considered “abandoned” property because security vulnerabilities prevent the original owners from withdrawing funds. Doe said that he discovered these wallets in October 2024, developed an algorithm to identify wallets that meet the abandonment criteria, reported them to the New York Police Department, and spent one year searching for the original owners. The complaint asks the court to confirm that Doe and his two assignee companies (ABC Company and XYZ Company) are the lawful owners of these wallets and their contents. On December 1, 2025, Doe transferred ownership of all but 18 wallets to ABC Company, which then transferred 17.7% of the rights to XYZ Company. Based on estimates by the founder of the blockchain analytics platform Timechain Index, the total holdings of these wallets are approximately 3.7 million Bitcoins, worth about $285 billion at current prices.

If this algorithm is really effective, on-chain archaeology will become popular in the future.
