Pope's encyclical calls for disarming AI to protect humanity from its harm
Pope Pius XIV issued his first encyclical, titled "Magnifica humanitas," discussing how to safeguard human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). He called for the "disarmament" of artificial intelligence to protect humanity from its dangers and domination. He believed AI should become more "humane," and that this technology needs to break free from monopolistic control and should no longer be used to gain geopolitical or commercial advantages.
The Pope pointed out that disarmament means rejecting the assumption that technological power automatically grants ruling authority. This does not mean rejecting technology itself, but rather preventing technology from dominating humans.
The Pope further stated that AI cannot eliminate the inherent inhumanity in conflicts; instead, it may accelerate the outbreak of conflicts, making them more cold and ruthless. He warned that some might see armed conflict as an effective way to divert attention from domestic issues, and as a cynical tool to cope with crises.
The Pope reminded that using computer technology in war poses dangers and may lead people to ignore morality. He emphasized that no algorithm can morally justify war.
The Pope’s encyclical offers moral guidance in response to the greatest challenges faced by his era.
In a subsequent speech, the Pope emphasized the need for the global community—including religious groups, civil society, scholars, and governments—to take this matter seriously, carefully examine it, and promote developments in a better direction. He also hopes that more insightful critics will point out laboratory shortcomings, that moral voices are needed, and that no interest groups should interfere.
