Have you ever stopped to think about how someone builds a fortune of US$ 9.6 billion from an emerging country? Well, Marcos Galperin did exactly that.
The guy was born in Buenos Aires in 1971, came from a family with a business background, but went to study economics at the University of Pennsylvania and then did an MBA at Stanford. There at Stanford, he was exposed to the first e-commerce models — eBay, Amazon — and thought: why not adapt this for Latin America?
In 1999, when the internet was still new here, Galperin launched Mercado Libre. Simple at first: a marketplace connecting buyers and sellers. But he saw further. He started building a complete ecosystem — Mercado Pago for payments, Mercado Envíos for logistics, advertising, credit. This created entry barriers that no competitor could jump.
The IPO took place in 2007 on Nasdaq. Since then, it has been steady growth. Today, Mercado Libre is worth more than US$ 125 billion. And Marcos Galperin’s fortune? It’s all tied up in the company’s shares. He is the largest individual shareholder, so when the market goes up, his fortune rises along with it.
What’s interesting is that this guy doesn’t go around giving interviews. He lets the numbers speak. And what numbers, huh? Marcos Galperin’s fortune has made him the richest Argentine in the world. Recently, in 2026, he stepped down from the role of global CEO and became Executive Chairman, focusing on strategy and long-term vision. He left daily operations to Ariel Szarfsztejn.
All of this shows that it’s possible to build something huge in emerging markets, even with economic instability. Marcos Galperin’s fortune isn’t just wealth — it’s proof that quality entrepreneurship works.
