Trading US stocks can be really frustrating if you can't get the timing right. Especially because market holidays and daylight saving time often disrupt trading plans. There's a 13-14 hour time difference with Korea, plus the market holidays to consider.
The main US stock exchanges are NYSE, NASDAQ, and AMEX, and their trading hours are all the same. Regular trading hours are from 09:30 to 16:00 Eastern Time, which is usually 23:30 to 06:00 Korean time (22:30 to 05:00 during daylight saving time). That means you can trade from Korea's evening to early morning the next day.
Few people know about the pre-market and after-hours trading. The pre-market runs from 04:00 to 09:30 Eastern Time (18:00 to 23:30 Korean time), and the after-hours from 16:00 to 20:00 Eastern Time (06:00 to 10:00 the next day Korean time). Morning traders can use the pre-market, while those who prefer night trading can utilize the regular hours.
The most important thing is to know the market holidays in advance. For 2026, the US market is closed on January 1 (New Year’s Day), January 19 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), February 16 (Presidents' Day), April 3 (Good Friday), May 25 (Memorial Day), June 19 (Juneteenth), July 3 (Independence Day), September 7 (Labor Day), November 26 (Thanksgiving), and December 25 (Christmas). On these days, trading is completely halted, so be sure to check these dates when planning.
Besides market holidays, there are days with early closures. The day before Independence Day (July 2), the day after Thanksgiving (November 27), and Christmas Eve (December 24) all close early at 1:00 PM Eastern Time. That’s 2:00 AM the next day Korean time. These days tend to have lower trading volume and higher volatility, so caution is advised.
Another often overlooked point for Korean investors is that US stock exchanges do not have price limit bands like Korean markets. If prices drop sharply, you might not be able to respond quickly, leading to bigger losses. Also, settlement occurs two business days after the trade, but if there are market holidays in between, the settlement period can be extended.
Daylight saving time is also crucial. From the second Sunday in March at 2:00 AM to the first Sunday in November at 2:00 AM, trading hours are moved one hour earlier. That means from 22:30 to 05:00 Korean time. During this period, you need to double-check the times to avoid missing trading opportunities.
For reference, NYSE is the largest exchange with about 2,400 listed companies, including many major firms like Apple, Microsoft, and NVIDIA on NASDAQ, which is tech-focused. AMEX mainly lists mid-sized and small companies, attracting growth stock investors.
Ultimately, the first step to successful US stock investing is knowing the trading hours and market holidays precisely. Once you organize this information, trading becomes much easier. Since exchange schedules can change, it’s also important to always check the latest updates.
