Just spent way too much time comparing commodity trading platforms and figured I'd share what I found since a lot of people keep asking me about this stuff.
So here's the thing - if you're looking to trade commodities (oil, gold, metals, agricultural stuff), the platforms are actually pretty different depending on what you want. Some are great for beginners, others are built for people who know what they're doing.
Mitrade is honestly solid if you're starting out. Australian-based, user-friendly, and they let you trade oil, gold, natural gas through CFDs without actually owning the stuff. No commissions either - just spreads. The leverage goes up to 1:400 for precious metals which is pretty decent. I tested their demo account first and it's actually helpful for getting a feel for things.
eToro's got this copy trading feature that's interesting if you want to basically mirror what experienced traders are doing. You can trade commodities through CFDs or grab commodity ETFs. Spreads are higher than Mitrade though, and they charge withdrawal fees which is annoying.
Plus500 keeps it simple - no commissions, just spreads, and they've got stop-loss tools to protect you from getting wrecked by price swings. But honestly, their research tools are pretty weak compared to others.
IG Group is more for people who know what they're doing. They've got crazy detailed research, advanced charting, access to like 35+ different commodities. Spreads start from 0.1 to 2.0 points. Not cheap, but solid if you're serious.
CMC Markets is similar - advanced platform, competitive spreads (0.2 to 0.3), great analytical tools. But again, not beginner-friendly.
Saxo Bank supports both CFDs and futures, so that's more flexible. But the fees are higher and it's definitely for advanced traders only.
Interactive Brokers is the professional's choice. Direct access to global commodity markets through futures and options, low fees for high-volume traders. Super powerful but yeah, steep learning curve.
AvaTrade is another beginner-friendly option with educational resources and MetaTrader support. Simple interface, decent spreads.
Honestly, if I had to pick one for someone just getting into commodity trading platforms, I'd say Mitrade or AvaTrade. Both are easy to use and won't drain your account with fees. If you're more experienced and want advanced tools, IG Group or CMC Markets are where it's at.
The main thing is checking what commodities you actually want to trade - they all have different ranges. Some have 20+, some have 100+. Also matter what fees work for your trading style.
Anyone else have experience with these? Curious what you all prefer.
