Hermes's move is quite interesting, registering itself as Codex's MCP server, essentially letting Codex do the work while managing scheduling itself, with clear division of labor.

After OpenClaw, Nous Research’s Hermes Agent also handed the OpenAI model loop over to Codex.
According to BlockBeats, Hermes Agent has added support for Codex runtime. Once enabled, terminals, editors, sandboxes, and MCP calls for openai/* and openai-codex/* are executed within Codex, with Hermes only responsible for conversations, slash commands, gateways, memory, and skill review. Hermes registers itself as Codex's MCP server, injecting 17 tools (including web search, browser automation, visual analysis, image generation, etc.) into Codex via stdio; requests like web_search are routed through MCP back to Hermes. The default is opt-in, with /codex-runtime codex enabled, and /codex-runtime auto to switch back.
